SPECIES 4: THE AWAKENING
I was a little worried about reviewing SPECIES 4 as I had not seen part three and didn't wanna be confused as to what the hot alien chick was doing and why. Fortunately, it stands on it's own, for better or worse. As it begins we meet Miranda(Helena Mattson), a hot blonde, leggy college professor type as she gives a lecture about Zeus punishing man with the gift of women. I'm thinking she's an alien girl as she is blonde and I saw SPECIES 1 & 2. Miranda lives with Uncle Tom (Ben Cross) a kindly sort of guy, well mannered and fairly asexual. In other words I don't think he's fucking his "niece". Ben Cross doesn't let on that he's bitter about being in SPECIES 4 like some actors who had done films like CHARIOTS OF FIRE might. He doesn't seem drunk either. Miranda goes out on a date and winds up naked in the park with a little of the alien species girl skin rash going on. She's taken to a hospital and before you know it a buncha people are killed by a species girl with a really long tongue. Uncle Tom shows up with a syringe of anti-alien juice and injects Miranda, causing her to become a blonde hottie again. Then it's off to Mexico to find a former colleague of Uncle Tom who might be able to help.
Once on the trip, Tom tells Miranda the obvious: he's not her real uncle and she's half alien and was made in the lab. She doesn't really freak out and is a pretty good sport about it. She can also read books just by holding them but I have no idea why this is in the movie. Maybe to explain why she is so well read. This movie really does Mexico no favors as it is depicted as a border town alien filled shithole. Tom and Miranda find his former colleague, a cocky Australian guy who has been building alien hybrid fuck buddies and living in a warehouse. His trophy is Azura, a hot brunette alien slut who likes to dress as a nun. He also makes money creating hybrid clones of dead humans for people who miss their departed relatives. He pretty fucking lax about his security and should really take the creation of alien monsters more seriously. For some reason, he has also created some local Mexican hybrid cab drivers and service people, possibly for yard work, as it's never explained. Anyway he has a plan to help Miranda but has to kill a human to do it which causes Tom to make the choice of saving Miranda or not. As these thing go, Miranda is saved but becomes a super horny bisexual alien who wants to get knocked up pronto. She goes off for some sperm and we get an alien-human sex scene with strobe lighting. Why always with the strobe lighting? There's a cool confrontation at the end between bad and less bad alien hotties, which reminded me of the X-MEN movies for some reason. It becomes clear you can build a hot alien slut with real or fake tits, it's your choice, so keep that in mind. I had actually seen another of director Nick Lyons' flicks, GRENDEL, on the sci-fi channel and this one was better. It looks pretty good and is competent technically for a sequel this far down the line. It could definitely have been more warped and pushed the weird sex angle more though as it just doesn't stand out. These direct to dvd studio sequels always come off as too safe for my taste and I imagine this will play uncut, save for nudity, on the sci-fi channel soon.
