THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN

You get what you pay for in this Clive Barker adaptation. There's a train full of meat all right. Good chilli meat. Wolf brand chilli even. It's basically about obsession as far as I can tell. And meat on a train. A photographer ends up shooting pics of the sinister Vinnie Jones on the train and connects him to a series of disappearances. He becomes more and more crazed about following Jones when he should really have let it go. Maybe he didn't realize he was in a Clive Barker adaptation. So he alienates his girlfriend with his one track mind and some rough anal sex and then finds himself in deep shit. A word about the implied anal; the moment after you propose to your girl is not really the time to bend her over a counter and butt fuck her, but I suppose it is a character revealing moment. Judging from the comments on that fountain of mostly idiocy known as IMDB, you're either gonna buy into it or not. It worked for me though. It's a great looking picture from the Japanese director Ryûhei Kitamura, the guy who did the kitchen sink Godzilla flick GODZILLA: FINAL WARS which also seems to be a flick people hate. Once again, not me.

As far as gore goes, there's lots. Some cgi, which gore people will bitch about. Fuck, I'm tired of people whining about cgi. It's just another tool. I get it you don't like cgi, now shut the fuck up about it. The actors are all good and it's nice to see Brook Shields as a sexy cutthroat art broker. That guy who plays Talb on HOUSE is in it too. Poor Talb. Vinnie Jones is pretty great as Mahogany, the dapper butcher. The guy's definitely got "menacing" down. It's hard to believe he was a soccer player, I figured he played something a bit rougher.

I like that the flick has it's own mythology although some people are gonna be bothered that things go unexplained. Like this guy right here:

ok so i just finished watching MMT, and i dont get the end at all. what are those things in the subway? was the guy killing people to bring them food? are they people? or what? i am confused right now.

That's what I'm talking about. It doesn't really fit into any particular sub-genre of horror which is nice. Unless conspiracy/descent into the maelstrom/meat movies are a sub -genre. It's much more of a really dark fantasy than a slasher flick and I can guarantee that a lot of idiots are gonna think the ending is stupid. They're gonna feel the need to know more and that a character should show up and explain everything. Thing is, you people know who you are so stick to PROM NIGHT or TWILIGHT and leave this sort of thing to us thinkers.
