HELL'S GROUND
In the long history of Gorillanaut, we have never reviewed a Pakastani film until now, as we take a look at Omar Khan's version of the American teens in a van who later die horribly film, ZIBAHKHANA (HELL'S GROUND). You kids know where Pakastan is right? It's between Westwego and Narnia. So anyway, some kids head off to a concert. There's three dudes and a couple of girls. Despite being from Pakastan, they are pretty much like the kids you'd see in an American flick. A good girl, a less than good girl who are both hot and deliciously exotic to a guy like me. Seriously, after I watched this movie I wanted to see some porn with Pakistani chicks and there seems to be a lot of that available. There's a funny stoner and a couple of other dudes. They stop at the Pakistani version of the creepy gas station and get tea and the stoner guy eats some shit that's looks nasty. It turns out a toxic spill of some sort has turned the locals into flesh eaters and the kids pick up the Pakistani Ed Neal hitchhiker from THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE which predictably goes horribly. After that narrow escape they end up stranded where they meet a spooky old lady and really bad things happen. There's some real nice stuff in the final third of the picture involving a creepy killer in a burqua as Khan manages some nice atmosphere with the set design and lighting.
It doesn't try to hide where it's inspiration comes from and I liked that. There's nothing original to the plot except that it switches from an eco themed zombie film to a slasher film but it has little touches which make it interesting. The smaller roles are filled with great character actors too, especially the creepy old lady and the vendor. There's a good amount of gore for the folks that like to see red. I also really liked the sound track which after some digging I found out consisted of Lollywood classics and not so classics (according to the director) such as: Sun We Bilori Akh Waleya - Madame Noor Jehan Munda Shehr Lahore Da - Madame Noor Jehan O My Love I promise You - Nahid Akhter Some Love One - Nahid Akther Nai Laila Naya Majnu title theme remix Maula Ali - Farid Qawwal Phook Le - Zuj Jibran
I got myself some Noor Jehan off itunes-good stuff. I assume and may be completely wrong, that it's tough to get a chick to take her top off for a commercial film in Pakistan so I'll give the guy some slack for not having any tits in the pic. Another interesting thing was the dialect and slang the kids spoke that mixed English and Urdo. I would be interested to see what Omar Khan could do with some more money. In the flick the stoner guy watches THE LIVING CORPSE which is apparently Pakistan's first horror flick and is a version of Dracula with the actor Rehan from HELL'S GROUND. I'll get to that one next.
